One Page Summary of the SCA, Barony of Caer Galen

by Robert Warden

Location

The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is world-wide, but most of the members are in the USA. It is broken into large regions called Kingdoms. Most of Colorado and the surrounding areas is the Kingdom of the Outlands. The Kingdoms are then broken into smaller groups. Boulder and Broomfield Counties are basically the Barony of Caer Galen (that's us!)

Organization

The people in charge of Caer Galen are the Seneschal (regional president) and the Baron and Baroness. We have a newsletter, an email list, and monthly business meetings.

Purpose

Members of the SCA learn about life in the Middle Ages and Renaissance through re-creation (and recreation). Just about anything between the years 600 and 1600 is appropriate.

Participation

Members don't just study fencing or dancing, they practice fencing or dancing! Other areas include languages, sewing, weaving, beads, candles, brewing, music, etc. You can participate as much or as little as you like. Both men and women take part in all activities, and all ages are welcome.

Membership in the SCA is handled at the society level, and there are forms to mail in. The Hospitaller (new member facilitator) can answer questions and provide loaner garb (period clothing).

Events and Activities

Campouts are big in the SCA, especially from May to September. This is basic car camping, except everyone is in costume. Most people use typical tents, sleeping bags, and propane stoves; but some members have more authentic gear. During the day, we participate in fighting, fencing, archery, arts & science classes, games, etc. At night, we sit around the campfire sharing stories and socializing.

Check us out

The best way to see what we are about is to come to an activity! Most gatherings are not in costume, so you can just show up and see what's going on.

We have weapons practice every Tuesday. Fencers and armored fighters get together to practice, and others get together on the side to socialize or work on art projects. Once a month, we have archery practice. You can rent equipment at the site.

Directions to these activities as well as other information is on our website: http://www.caergalen.org/
